With our mid-term elections less than 1 week away I thought I would write about the shared human experience. Over the past 2 years our country seems divided. There are a good number of people who fear this no longer will be a predominantly white, Christian country. Fear we will have too many people of different races, religions and origins. We have people who feel their way of thinking is the only way of thinking, their way or the highway. In today’s climate there does not appear to be any room for forgiveness or tolerance when someone makes a mistake or misspeaks. The answer appears to be the same, rather than seeing it as a teaching moment the mob mentality goes to social media and the individual is immediately fired. No counseling, no second chance at redemption, no forgiveness. Even our children are no longer aloud to make mistakes. We have a zero tolerance policy in our schools. One mistake and our child is expelled or arrested. George shared a story with me regarding him bring a pen knife to school to show the kids. He was caught and his parents were informed and yes he was chastised by the teacher for bringing a knife to school. He did not see the danger in it and certainly learned from the experience. No police, no arrest and no expulsion. In today’s world he would have been arrested and/or expelled.
Over 300 years ago our forefathers came here because of religious persecution. They wanted a better life for themselves and their families; a life of freedom to pursue happiness and worship freely and openly without fear of harm. Our governing bodies were founded on this freedom and belief. Democracy is a group activity and cannot and should not be taken for granted. There are powers working to take away our right to worship and speak freely. Remember, the First Amendment protects freedom of speech and freedom of press as it is there to keep the powerful governing bodies in check. Not all news is “fake” news. A story is not fake because you don’t like what is reported. It is fake if it is untrue, if it cannot be backed up by facts. It is our job to seek the truth and know the difference. It is our job to use our voice to pick leaders to represent what we stand for. Over 100,000,000 people did not vote in our last election. This amount of people was truly the majority and they did not speak. Democracy can be eliminated if we don’t protect it.
In recent years there have been numerous shootings taking the lives of innocent people. They came from all walks of life. They were different religions, races, sexual orientations and different socio-economic backgrounds. But, they all had one thing in common. They all bled red. They all had people who loved them. The pain of a mother losing her child was the same whether she was black, white, Muslim Jewish, Hispanic or Christian. At the end of the day we are AMERICANS.
When you cast your vote Tuesday please think about the commonality of the Human Race. We fundamentally want the same things for us and our children.
At the end of the day we are human. We must share the same planet and take care of our planet. With no planet there is no wealth. With no planet there is no human. As Ellen DeGeneres says each day on her show “Be Kind To One Another.”
